Apple has announced that its new iPhone models – namely the 12 Mini with 5.4in display, 12 and Pro with 6.1in display, and Pro Max with 6.7in display – will not include the power adaptor and Earpods in the packaging.

The company said in a press statement that this move will help them to reduce carbon emissions and minimise the mining and use of precious materials. As a result, Apple said it can produce smaller and lighter packaging as well as allowing more boxes to be shipped on a pallet.

Apple will only include the USB-C to Lightning cable for customers purchasing the new iPhone 12.

Based on pricing on the local Apple website, a new 20W USB-C power adapter is priced at RM99, a 30W USB-C power adaptor goes for RM189 while a 61W USB-C power adapter retails at RM269.

If customers are still using a USB power adaptor from their previous iPhone purchase, then they have to consider getting a new USB-C adaptor just to charge their new iPhone 12.

As for Earpods, the ones with Lightning connector cost RM99. For headphones with 3.5mm jack, they can get the Lightning adaptor for RM55. For a wireless experience, customers can consider the AirPods for RM699 or AirPods Pro for RM1,099.

Some users have taken to social media to express their dismay over Apple’s decision to remove the power adaptor and Earpods from its new iPhone box.

There were those asking if Apple is considering a new “build your own iPhone” approach while one has described the decision as “ridiculous”. Another person questioned how this approach is better for the environment when the additional accessories come in their own packaging.

The iPhone 12 Mini is priced at RM3,399 (64GB), RM3,599 (128GB) and RM4,099 (256GB) while the 12 is priced at RM3,899 (64GB), RM4,099 (128GB) and RM4,599 (256GB).

Both models come with a Super Retina XDR OLED display, dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, and one 12-megapixel front-facing camera with A14 Bionic chip.

The Pro model starts at RM4,899 (128GB), RM5,399 (256GB) and RM6,299 (512GB). Then the Pro Max is priced at RM5,299 (128GB), RM5,799 (256GB) and RM6,699 (512GB).

Both models have a Super Retina XDR OLED display, triple 12-megapixel rear cameras, one 12-megapixel selfie camera with A14 Bionic chip. Local availability will be announced later.
